The Signal Generator Connection

A signal generator is a device used to generate various types of electronic signals. Signal Generators can alternatively be called test signal generators, function generators, tone generators, arbitrary waveform generators, or frequency generators. Signal Generators are most often used to test and diagnose malfunctioning electrical equipment. A Signal generator can be used to create a specified electronic signal, which can then be passed through a specified piece of electronic equipment to see if it is functioning correctly.

Traditionally, signal generators have been stand-alone units, however in the modern age of computers, several software solutions can provide similar features and results.
